Beating the Heat?

It's the time of year in Saudi when the heat is truly unbelievable. Today's predicted high is 117 degrees, and it's not even the hottest time of the year yet. Heat like this means way too much indoor time for kids, and we are always on the lookout for something to break up the weekend days.

Last weekend, we spied an inflatable pool for the backyard for a mere 20 bucks at the local home store and jumped on it. As it's the weekend here, I blew it up this morning and got that baby set up in the backyard. Only problem is when I turned on the hose to fill it up at 9:30 a.m., the water was hot. Like, burned my foot hot at first. It cooled down a bit, but in no way can I say that the water coming out was cool. We threw in as many ice cubes as we had in the freezer, but it's basically a jacuzzi outside in the 105 degree morning weather. Somehow, these two are still having a blast.

For me, I'll just keep remembering how fantastic Saudi is for 5 months a year to make it another month until we head to the crisp Northwest.

7 Years Together

7 years ago today, a girl bundled in way too many layers of clothing for the end of May was handed over to us in Kunming, China. The day is so clear in some ways and fuzzy in others. I remember being nauseous the whole morning before we went, and I remember the red ink they used to take her footprints, but I can't remember what we talked about while we waited or what we did right afterwards. But the whole experience of receiving this child was overwhelming profound, and that has always been very clear to us both.

Modes of Transportation

Now that riding her bike is a piece of cake, she has added one more mode of transportation to her collection. We've been looking for a skateboard for a while, and this basic one we found at Carrefour is a great start. Our inspiration is a super cool middle school girl that we always see riding her skateboard to school.

Sojo is home sick with me today as she has an asthma cough that will not go away. Seems the perfect time to polish and wash the new board before heading off to the doctor.

I also love that this photo shows Sojo's affinity for sponges and brushes, and this love has been ongoing for years. She has a special place in the closet for her buckets and sponges, and she often takes them out to do some impromptu scrubbing of toys and such.

Biker Chick

This girl loves her bike. Our school has no lunch program, so she rides her bike back and forth to school four times a day, and that isn't even enough for her. She rides around the block while waiting for us in the morning, and I spot glimpses of her ponytails flying as she cruises around with friends in the afternoon. She's taken to doing some somewhat cautious bike tricks like casually dropping one hand off the handlebars (I adore how cool she thinks she is when she does this) and standing up while riding is the newest.

This was an early morning photo taken yesterday before school. The intensity on her face is awesome.
