The Perfect Bed

One of the big things on our 'to do' list this summer as we moved back into our house was getting a new bed for Sojo. Two summers ago, she had completely grown out of her toddler bed, and we were looking for something fun and big enough for cousin sleepovers. Since our town is filled with antique stores and thrift shops, I was lucky to score this iron daybed for only 95 dollars! It's perfect and has a trundle that comes out as an extra bed. Sojo was super, super happy with it.

I only added a few things to her room in an attempt to keep it simple and uncluttered. However, Sojo decided to add what she loves to call 'modifications.' Then it looked like this--perfect with her touches of books on the windowsill and her beach rock collection.

We had talked about how this is the kind of bed she can have her whole childhood and even into being a teenager, and I think she loved thinking about that. One morning, after her bath, she asked me to come and take a photo of her on her bed when she had it set up like a couch. Love when she asks me to take her photo. She also has the best morning light of the entire house in her room.

According to her, she slept better this summer as well. But that was because of her new hypnotizing glasses that actually say 'you are getting sleepy...' on the side. No joke that she slept like this one night. All night long. She slays me.

Amsterdam

Our brief time in Amsterdam was wonderful--it's such a charming city where skinny apartment buildings and canals abound. I am so glad we decided to stay outside the city center because the touristy section was rather blah. Too many people, bikes everywhere, and there was more than a fair share of raucous youth. My days of party traveling are long over, but Amsterdam has quite the draw for that.

The section of town we stayed in, Alexanderkade, was quiet and gorgeous. We had a Laverne and Shirley basement apartment that was stocked with food by the owner--Dutch cheese, wine, stroopwaffles and more. One day we spent 5 hours walking around the city, and although Sojo's feet were super tired, she was a real rock star. I often wonder if she will grow up wanting to travel the world or if she will just want to stay put with all the travelling we do.

I'd love to go back one day as we just scratched the surface of all there is to do in Amsterdam. But, for now, it's back to work with another year of little ones. Sojo is all set to start first grade next week!

Goodbye Summer of 2013

Summer of 2013 has come and gone, and it was a busy one filled with family, food and sunshine. We meant to get more hiking in, but it wasn't until the last few days that we even got out in the forest. It was worth the wait to spend time with those beautiful Northwest trees.

After saying goodbye to Washington, we took a very long flight (these seem to be getting longer as I get older) to Amsterdam to spend two days before heading back to work in Saudi. Day one was spent sleeping almost the whole day as we were shattered after not a wink of shuteye on the plane. This morning, I was out early in search of coffee and soaked up the early morning light. The houseboats on the canals are just so darn cool. I love how this cluster of houseboats had such a pretty view of willow trees and grass.

On the agenda today was a canal ride, but it was raining pretty hard earlier. We switched to going to the science museum after morning naps to get over our jetlag. Hoping we can still catch a canal ride later on if the weather holds up!

Surprise Cousin

Last weekend, our niece came over from Spokane with her partner and his 7 year old child. It only took these two about 10 minutes to decide they were cousins, and they were thrilled to be in each other's company. They played baseball countless times, practiced with light sabers (another Star Wars fan is always an instant friend), and spent way too many hours playing Minecraft on the iPad. I cringe at that, but it did give us adults time to visit.

I loved best that he towered over her, and that they grew so attached after such a short time. They have plans to meet in their mutually created Minecraft world named Steve. Yes, that sounds weird. This might be a precursor for the teen years and social media.

County Fair

This later summer has not only yielded awesome berry picking, but we also had the chance to attend the county fair for the first time. Promises of demolition derbies and 4 x 4 mud races were all we needed to have Sojo on board, and it was such a fun day.

Between the barrel racing and the mud rallies, we ate a large amount of shaved ice. Sojo was hilarious in how into the mud rally she was--a monster truck girl at heart. She was jumping and cheering for the truck she wanted to win (and she changed halfway through if hers was losing).

We'll definitely make this a yearly event. It was so down-home and Americana and summery and sunny. Speaking of sunny, my Washington flip-flop tan is coming along nicely with all this sun!!

Going Home

During this trip, we visited the house where Dale grew up. His mom still owns it and rents it, but it is empty at the moment and the perfect time to take a trip down memory lane. He has countless stories of living there, like fighting over the heater with his sisters or setting the backyard on fire. Oops! That story is Sojo's favorite, mostly because he was cheeky and about five when he did it.

Summer Harvest

Today we made the short trek to the property we got married on. Usually, we are already back in school by this time, but we have a later summer which allowed for us to harvest a whole mess of blueberries and blackberries from the property. Yippee!

We also have a small group of apple trees, but they were so grown over that we could only find a few within reach. No matter--we were stocked with berries, and mom made some blackberry jam when we returned home.

The rest of the afternoon was spent walking around the property, checking out the ponds, and playing some side yard baseball. All on a gloriously sunny day.

Every Day

This is where we spend a part of each day. Crisp summer weather, rocky beaches perfect for amassing a huge summer rock collection, and a city so beautiful that I never tire of walking the streets or sitting by the ocean. Especially when this sweetie is walking along the shore...
