Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong, a special Thai holiday, takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th lunar month, which happens to be tomorrow. It is a way to give thanks to the river goddess, apologize to her for polluting the rivers, and also to let go of things in our life by sending them down the river in a krathong. I bought our three krathongs today at school, and they are made of banana leaves, bamboo, orchids and marigolds. Stuck in the top is a candle and a few incense sticks. They are gorgeous.

Lucky for us, our neighborhood is on a lake, so we can take a short walk to light our candles and incense and send our krathongs out to join the many others that will float in the water tomorrow night.
Even luckier for me personally is that tomorrow is the eve of my 40th birthday. I so love the beginning of a decade--it feels so full of promise, and 40 just sounds so strong and cool to my ears. Having Loy Krathong fall on this special day is icing on the birthday cake.

As always, a dose of sweetness.

Can't wait for pictures of Loy Krathong on the lake. I will be especially thinking of you on the eve of your 40th birthday. Oh, how I remember that night 40 years ago. A rare snowstorm in the Hudson Valley, making our way in a '68 VW Bug up the road to the hospital where no plows had been, your law abiding father running red lights because there was not another soul on the road. Maybe that was our "krathong". Letting go of life as we knew it and becoming parents for the fist time. Happy soon to be b'day T. Enjoy all that life brings you...esp. that hubby and sweet baby girl.

Happy Birthday Tara and many more! How great to have a special holiday near it with its meaning. The flowers are beautiful. It is so neat you can learn about each areas special traditions and share them with the rest of us. Great Pic, thanks

What a beautiful sight that must be! I'm so glad to learn that everything in your Krathong is biodegradable. I had always wondered about that....How ironic it would be to apologize for polluting the water by polluting it... :)

Have a wonderful birthday. 40 may sound stronger than other ages, but I have a feeling that strength has never been something you've lacked. :)
